Getting Ready for Dental Implants

In the past, losing a tooth was devastating because it was difficult to replace. However, today things have improved significantly. People can get their teeth replaced almost instantly with dental implants that are nearly a perfect match to the original. What is more, these implants are tailor-made to ensure that they fit snugly, giving you a natural smile. Nevertheless, getting dental implants is a process that requires thorough preparation. Here are some of the essential things you need to do when you are getting ready to receive dental implants.

Dental Examination

A comprehensive examination of your dental structure by a qualified dentist will reveal critical details of your overall health and assist the dentist in determining if dental implants are the right solution to your problem. The tests also provide information that helps the dentist to figure out the best treatment plan. The dental examination involves x-rays, visual inspection, and an analysis of your medical records.

Use Antibiotics

After the comprehensive examination, your doctor will determine whether you need additional antibiotics. These are immunosuppressant drugs given to patients who receive medical implants and organ transplants to ensure the body doesn’t attack the grafts. Do not be surprised if your doctor gives you a range of antibiotics before the procedure. These drugs serve as a temporary immune system.

Prepare for the Operation

Your dentist will inform you that you will undergo a procedure under anesthesia. If the surgery requires general anesthesia, then you will be required to fast for about 12 hours before the surgery begins. You will also be required to wear loose and comfortable clothes so that the procedure goes on smoothly. Because of the effects of anesthesia, you will need to have a designated driver to drive you home. Another tip: don’t try to be a hero! Find someone to stay with you for at least two days after the surgery so that they can give you the necessary after-surgery care.

Prepare Your Jaw

If necessary, you should clean your jaw and the entire mouth thoroughly before the surgery. Your doctor might also perform improvements on your jaw to strengthen it and ensure it anchors the implant properly. Some of the common jaw improvements include bone graft, smoothing and reshaping of the jaw, jaw reduction, and removal of impacted teeth in the jaw. The implant procedure will only happen after the jaw heals completely.
